There are really no words that can be spoken to soften the sorrow or lessen the loss that is felt from losing someone close to us.  At the passing of a loved one, those of us that are left behind feel a profound sense of sadness, emptiness, and grief for a while.  Feelings of deep loneliness set in as we survivors envision a future without the person.

It is so difficult to realize that our loved one will no longer be present physically, to share conversations, walks, hugs, or ideas with us.  It is such a great loss because it involves losing a piece of yourself ... a part of what was very important to you.  Everyone and everything that we love becomes a part of us.

But it's important to realize that departed loved ones will always be with us.  They live on in our hearts, in memories of their teachings, and in the lives of all who know them.   They are very close to us in spirit, having only gone beyond the sound of our voices and the touch of our hands.   While death brings sadness, we should also try to have a sense of joy for the loved one who enters into a 'new home' and is re-united with family & friends that have gone before them.

After the first pain of grief has been softened by time, we may find great comfort in knowing that our loved ones are safe and free from all tears, pain, trials, and troubles for now they are where nothing can ever hurt them again. They are happy and waiting patiently for us to join them in their new eternal life.

The following poem is titled 'A Letter From Heaven'

To my dearest family...

...some things I'd like to say but first of all to let you know that I arrived Okay. I'm writing this from Heaven where I dwell with those I love. Here, there are no tears or sadness, there's just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight. Remeber that I'm with you every morning, noon and night. The day I had to leave you when my life on Earth was through, the Angels lifted me and said, 'We welcome you, it's good to have you back; you were missed while you were gone, as for your dearest family, they'll be here later on. We need you here now, you're part of the eternal plan, there's so much that we have to do to help our mortal man.

I was given a list of things that I must see to carry through and foremost on my list is to watch and care for you.

'When you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight, know that I am close to you in the middle of the night. When you think of our life and all those loving years, because you're only human, they are bound to bring you tears. Do not be afraid to cry, it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers unless there was some rain.'

'I wish that I could tell you all that I have planned but if I were to tell you now, you wouldn't undertstand. One thing is for certain, though my life on Earth is over, I'm closer to you now than I ever was before. There'll be many rocky roads ahead and lots of hills to climb; but together we will do it by taking one day at a time.'

'It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.  If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and in pain, then you can say with certainty, 'My day was not in vain and now I am contented that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.'

'So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick them up and on your way you go. When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind; know that I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.'

'So when it's time for you to go from that body to be free, remember you're not going, you're coming home to me.'

This poem is titled 'A Reply to Your Letter From Heaven'

My Dearest Loved one...

...I received your 'Letter from Heaven,' it made the teardrops fall.

But knowing you’re in Heaven above, sweet memories, I will recall.

I know that you are with me, for I feel your presence near.

And if I listen closely, your voice I clearly hear.

I know you’re watching over me as you promised you would do.

And when I feel saddened, it’s your love that sees me through.

When I lay in bed at night, the day’s chores put to flight,

I truly feel your presence, like a warm and glowing light.

About rocky roads, and the hills that I must climb;

I’ve done exactly what you said and taken one day at a time.

I’ve tried to help others who are in sorrow and in pain,

And now I am contented that my day was not in vain.

I’ll lend a hand, as you have said when someone's feeling low.

I’ll pray for them and be here, 'till on their way they go.

And when it’s time for me to leave to join you in Heaven up high,

My wings shall spread wide open as I fly to my home in the sky.

Both poems 'Letter From Heaven' and 'Letter From You' were written by Ruth Ann McHaffey

In time, you will smile again and truly feel it,

and your laughter will be genuine.

But until your pain has gone away and your sadness has disappeared,

don’t feel you have to be strong.

What you’re feeling is real.

Don’t feel like you’re wrong if you want to cry.

There are some roads in life that we must travel alone,

even though we may be surrounded by people whom we love.

Some things in life such as what you’re feeling now

can’t be felt by anyone but you.

But, just remember you are not alone at all;

Everyone who loves you is walking with you in spirit

and will be there with you.

You’ll find a new strength, a new peace and a new happiness.

It just takes a little time; one day at a time.
